ACADEMY OF POPULAR TRADITIONS

"SU NUGORESU" GROUP

Following the steps of a fourty-years old tradition which has made and still makes arouse greater and greater interest in the facts of popular culture in Nuoro, a large number of young people – with an experience of more than ten years in the field of folk activity, enriched from the human point of view too with the attendance at several international festivals in Italy and abroud – has created the ACADEMY OF POPULAR TRADITIONS "SU NUGORESU" GROUP.

The Group consists of a Chorus, with only male voices subdivided into first Tenors, second Tenors, Baritones and Basses.

Their rather extensive repertory is made up of the oldest popular melodies come to our knowledge mostly by oral tradition, but also of elaborations for chorus of that form of singing called "a tenores" ( an archaic way of singing, with soloist voice accompanied by the chorus at a guttural emission of the famous "bom bim bom"): moreover the repertory consists of the new mwlodies proposed and elaborated by the Art Director Tonino Puddu, who also harmonizes most of the songs.

The Group takes often part in shows with the DANCING team too, usually made up of six couples of dancers who often become eight or ten pairs, according to the requirements of the performance.

The dances are typical of Nuoro area, but on some occasion – that is for international festivals – dances of other parts of Sardinia are introduced.

The musical accompaniment is consigned to the notes of some typical instruments, such as the diatonic accordion, the mouth-organ, the trunfa, the guitar, and the voices of the "a tenore" chorus.
